Oracle announces Linux for businesses - WILL OFFER SUPPORT FOR RED HAT'S LINUX

Oracle is taking Linux to business customers -- and it's making it happen by going it alone.

The business software giant from Redwood Shores will offer full support services for Red Hat's version of the Linux open-source operating system, chief executive Larry Ellison said in a keynote speech at the company's Oracle OpenWorld conference today in San Francisco.

For weeks, rumors that Oracle was developing its own version of Linux had been circulating throughout the industry, driving down Red Hat's stock. The company has been offering some support, including patches of software bugs, for Linux since 2000, and has built up a staff of more than 100 engineers with Linux expertise.

Major technology players including Dell, Intel, Hewlett-Packard and IBM have lined up behind Oracle's Linux program. Oracle's service offerings are priced for as little as half the cost of many comparable Red Hat products.
